“LET’S TALK ABOUT IT, OKLAHOMA”

The last discussion in the series “The Cowboy” will be October 9th at 6:30pm in the Methodist Fellowship Hall.  It is important that you attend this meeting; we will make the decision about the theme for next year.

This week we will discuss Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Our scholar is Dr. Jennifer Kidney. Jennifer has been our scholar so many times we should make her an honorary citizen of Roger Mills County.

Lonesome Dove, Pulitzer Prize winning novel, has set a new standard for the cowboy novel, vastly different from the 1902 novel by Owen Wister. The original screenplay was so different that it was turned down by such actors as John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart.  The cowboys are separate from the cows.  This is a sad story of people who spend their lives loving other people who cannot, will not, or do not love them back. Our characters are crude,  unsavory and human, not heroic; but in spite of this we respect and admire them.

Almost everyone has seen the movie, at least once, come join us for an in depth discussion with our scholar.

The “Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma “ program is brought to you by the Nation Endowment for the Humanities, The Oklahoma Humanities Council, the Oklahoma Library Association, the Roger Mills Arts and Humanities Council. We would like to thank the Minnie Slief Library for their help in distributing the books.

See you Monday for our last discussion of 2006.
