50 YEARS AGO

               

            Sixty-five students of the Cheyenne grade school entered the soil and water conservation poster contest sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Soil Conservation Districts of Oklahoma. The winners in each of the three divisions were: Ann Gowdy, 7th & 8th grades; Bill Males, 5th & 6th grades and Bill Casady, 3rd & 4th grades.

               

            Gordon Estes, John Alvin Pierce and Donnie Shelton of PAM, Goodwell, spent the weekend with their parents.

               

            Mr. and Mrs. Everett Swartwood of Sayre are proud parents of twin sons who arrived at the  Cheyenne hospital on February 18th. Each boy weighed six pounds and one ounce upon arrival. Bill Henry and Bob Gaines are the names selected.

               

            Students from Cheyenne school who participated in the Tri-County Speech Meet at Custer City, Friday, came home proud and happy; and rightfully so, because they won the grade school trophy. Cheyenne grade school won the meet with a total of 63 points. Hammon was runner-up with 60 points.

               

            Two men, residents of El Centro, California, were killed Monday when their plane crashed 3-½ miles east of Strong City. The plane plunged into a canyon on the Herring Ranch. The crash occurred immediately following an explosion, according to Mrs. Geo. Wing, an eyewitness who said she saw the plane circle and break into flames after it exploded. The dead are Loyd William Ford, 30, and Max Adolphys Frauenthal, 41. According to information received from California, the two men were returning to California from a trip to the East, and were flying the Piper Tri-Pacer back for another person.
