Roger Mills County...50 YEARS AGO

C.E. Lippencott brought the first load of wheat from the 1956 crop to Cheyenne June 3rd, which is unusually early for Roger Mills County. This wheat was produced on a Washita valley farm west of Cheyenne and Mr. Lippencott stated that this field would probably average 25 bushels to the acre. Mr. Lippencott has more acreage of wheat in the Pie Flat community, which he estimates will yield more than a 25 bushel per acre average. A probable income of a half million dollars from the 1956 crop of wheat in Roger Mills County is foreseen. Those who follow the wheat crop closely in this county estimate that there will be approximately 32,000 acres harvested if favorable weather continues. The wheat brought to Cheyenne by Mr. Lippencott tested 62 according to Elzie Campbell, Cheyenne elevator operator and tested 12.82 moisture content. The fact that there is wheat harvest in Roger Mills County this year is good news as there was no wheat produced in 1955.

A crowd estimated at 300 attended the annual Old Day County picnic held at Grand last Sunday. It was an ideal occasion and no pains had been spared in providing for the needs of the picnickers. A speaker’s platform, tables for spreading the basket lunch, plenty of seats, and a loud speaker were provided. The lake back of the picnic site was in perfect condition for those who enjoyed swimming. In addition Mr. Rex Holloway, owner of the site of Old Grand, had provided ample supply of cold drinks to which the people served themselves, making their own change. Rev. A.L. Martin pleased the crowd with his excellent sermon in the morning. For this service Glenn E. Estes, Durham, led the singing. Rev. Martin is a grandson of a pioneer preacher of Old Day County. The prayer service was by John C. Casady, who edited a newspaper at Hamburg and a Crawford during the days Old Day County was flourishing. A sumptuous basket dinner was enjoyed at the noon hour. During this hour old timers enjoyed visiting and reminiscing of early Day County days. O.E. Enfield had on display a scrapbook with many pictures and newspaper articles of Grand, county seat of Old Day County.  Howard Metcalfe, Durham, emceed the afternoon program. This program was interspersed with music. Musicians contributing to this program included Everett Harrison, Archie Harrison and family Nadine and Minnie Lou Harrison, all of Cheyenne and Reydon; Royal Myers of Pampa, Texas, Walter Stewart, Gage, Edwin Wagnon, Higgins, Bill Gabbart, Cheyenne and Mr. & Mrs. Howard Metcalfe. J.W. Chalfant and Chink Beaty of Cheyenne and C.V. Word of Arnett presented the Cowboy Hall of Fame fundraising campaign now in progress in Oklahoma. Other speakers on the afternoon program were Frank Ewing, Ralph Hanawalt, George Gantz, Anzley Ellis, Bert Larson, Sam Barton, S.S. McColgin, Horace Gilliland, John Casady, C.A. Null and Lawrence Poor. Mr. Null, secretary of the Old Day County Association, read a published program of the Day County Fair held at Grand in 1904. Mrs. O.H. Richards, a pioneer school teacher, gave a tribute to the pioneer teacher and read a list of the teachers of Old Day County. The afternoon program was concluded by a very interesting talk by Judge O.E. Enfield of Arnett, writer and historian. Mrs. John Casady, Cheyenne, president of the Old Day County Association, in her remarks stated that during its 15 years of existence, Old Day County’s history was indelibly written on the pages of Oklahoma history. C.V. Word, Arnett and Bess Bullard, Cheyenne, were named to arrange for an Old Day County float in the parade at Cheyenne on April 19, 1957.  The 1956 annual picnic of Old Day County residents at Grand, site of the former county seat, went into history as one of the most outstanding annual picnics ever held by this group.
