Registered voters in Roger Mills County who want to vote by absentee ballot in next Tuesday’s Primary Election have missed the deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to them, County Election Board Secretary Donna L. Eakins said today.
“They aren’t out of luck, however,” Eakins said.
“In-person absentee voters fill out an application form when they get to the office. They are not required to give a reason for voting absentee,” Eakins said. “They are required to swear that they have not voted a regular mail absentee ballot and that they will not vote at their polling places on Election Day.”
According to Eakins, the Absentee Voting Board verifies a voter’s registration information then issues the voter’s ballots. The voter marks the ballots in a voting booth and then puts them in the voting device. “It is very much like voting at a precinct polling place,” said Eakins.
In addition, any registered voter who becomes physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, won’t have to miss the election.
Eakins said, state law permits registered voters who will be unable to go to the polls because they became incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, to vote on an emergency basis. “Physical incapacitation” includes a variety of conditions, injury, illness, childbirth, that prevent a person from voting in person at the polls on election day.
If you think that you or someone you know fits into this category, or for more information concerning in-person absentee voting, contact the County Election Board office at 497-3330. Office hours are 8:00-2:00, Monday through Friday.
