50 YEARS AGO

                 

            $135 is the first prize offered in Cheyenne Cash Day Awards next Saturday, August 4th. Eligible to receive prizes last Saturday were Noot Hooper, Wenona Moore, J.W. Mayfield and C.H. Neal. Mrs. Moore was the only one present to claim her prize.

               

            Ten high school youths from Cheyenne are attending the annual Senior camp of the Methodist Youth Fellowship this week. The camp is located at Devil’s Canyon which was recently purchased by the Methodist Conference of Oklahoma for the use of youth. The camp, located near Hinton, is completely new. Those attending from Cheyenne are Vincent Boggs, Jay Chalfant, Jim Males, Tommie Vick, Joe Peterson, Windle Turley, Barbara Gaynor, Janette Bonds, Fern Ford and Mona Gaynor.

               

            The Will Gantz family gathered for a reunion Sunday. Present were Genevieve of the  home address, Ruth and family and Esther from Amarillo, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Kerbs and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Freddy Kerbs from Shattuck, and George and family from Sturgis, Michigan.

               

            Mr. and Mrs. Claud Hawkins visited with many friends in Sayre last Saturday. They had their daughter, Mrs. Wanda Bird and husband from Pampa and their son Dewitt and family as dinner guest Sunday.

               

            A group of teenagers gathered at the Wayne Davis home Friday for an evening of fun, games and good eats.

               

            Mrs. Orville Conrad left Friday evening with her daughter, Miss June Conrad, Elk City, for Springfield, Ohio to visit another daughter, Mrs. Paul M. Harris and family.

               

            Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Medley and boys are moving to their new home in Reydon. They have done a lot of remodeling.

               

            Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Owen arrived here last week. Mr. Owen has just been released from the Army and has gone to Cotton Center, Texas where he will be employed. Mrs. Owen, who has been attending school at Stillwater, remained here for the week.

               

            The Crawford Public School will start August 13th at 9 a.m. according to an announcement from Marvin C. Leist, superintendent. The faculty for the 1956-57 school year consist of Mrs. Lois Jackson, grades 1 & 2; Mrs. D. Blaylock, grades 3 & 4; Mrs. Myra Leist, grades 5 & 6; Miss Margie Coulter, English & Girls’ Physical Educational; Mr. Dale Cockrell, Business & Science; Mr. M.C. Jackson, principal and Marvin C. Leist, superintendent. Two new classes have been added to the curriculum this year, Home Economics I and Family Living. New equipment consists of two Singer sewing machines, typewriter and a Bioscope.

               

            Members of the family of Jim Blackketter enjoyed a reunion last Sunday in the home of J. Eugene Blackketter of the Red Starr community in Roger Mills County. Among those present were Mr. & Mrs. T.W. Blackketter and Dell and Mr. & Mrs. Warren and Georgia Ann, Mary Jane and Bob Mills, all of Oklahoma City; Bob Blackketter of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mr. & Mrs. K.C. Blackketter of Upland, California; Dr. & Mrs. Don Blackketter of Shamrock, Texas; Mr. & Mrs. J. Eugene Blackketter, Areal and Iris of Leedey; Mr. & Mrs. Eldon Noel, Marie Dell and Joan of Abilene, Kansas; Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Blackketter and Susan of Stillwater; Mr. & Mrs. Fred Bailey and children of Weatherford; Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Blackketter, Ila, Lehman and Marion of Cheyenne; Mr. & Mrs. Fred Menzer of Custer City; Mr. & Mrs. Bob Mills of Phoenix, Arizona; Mr. & Mrs. Roy Blackketter and children of Leedey; Mr. & Mrs. H.R. Moler and children of Compo, Colorado; Leota Blackketter, Leedey; and Mr. & Mrs. Roy Haney and children of Oklahoma City. A total of 67 persons enjoyed the reunion together.

               

            Mrs. Buster Dodson and infant daughter, Melva Dawn, came home from the hospital Wednesday. Mrs. Ruby Bogges and Mrs. Mary Ann Driver cleaned house for her.

               

            Mr. & Mrs. Robert Cogburn visited Mr. & Mrs. Frank Calvert and Doris Saturday night.

               

            Rev. Bob Franks, Baptist pastor at Hammon, conducted a revival meeting at the school auditorium at Herring the past week. Mrs. Franks was pianist and Mr. Brown Dugger led the singing. Special music was given each night.

               

            Mrs. Louis Chapman and Renee are visiting her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. W.A. Miller, at Hammon. She received word from her husband, who is in the service, that he has climbed a step higher and has another stripe to his credit. Congratulations to you, Louis.

               

            Among the huge crowd attending the Farmers Union picnic in Metcalfe’s Grove east of Durham were Mr. & Mrs. H.H, Cavener, Mr. & Mrs. H.H. Friedrichsen, Mr. & Mrs. Bert Spencer, Mrs. Irene Bartz, all from Sunny Point and Mr. & Mrs. Frank Myers and grandson, Mike Blevins of Sweetwater. Mrs. Friedrichsen received third prize in the husband calling contest. They all report a bounteous basket dinner, good entertainment, and good speakers, who included Cecil I. Neeley of Sayre, George Stone, state president of the Farmers Union and others.
